A late-August thought:
A lunch break I arranged for myself. A much-needed intermission from the project I was working on. Stepped into my clogs and left the house, not checking how I looked or, for once, if I left the stove on. I plugged in my wired headphones, selected my curated-by-Spotify Jazz mix, and slipped my phone into my left pocket. In my right pocket was my hand, fiddling with my house keys and ID, just in case something happened to me and they needed to reveal my identity. Looking down and with a big sigh, I embarked on my ‘creative process walk.’ That’s how I titled it to feel better about needing time to myself, no tech involved. Simply staring at my favourite houses in the neighbourhood. I admit it, sometimes I look up their addresses and take little digital tours around their house– my jaw dropping when I see the listed price on their realtor’s website. Some of them have impeccable taste in decorating, while others seem to have hired a big-firm interior designer. “We are not really sure what we are looking for. Just make it feel homey.”
Stepping on a bunch of rosy, crispy leaves- the thought of Fall invaded my headspace. I walk through a sprinkler, head first, as I realized the summer will end soon, and I must enjoy the reminders of warm weather left. My sky blue button-up is now spotty and heavy from the water. I look up and find the house cat staring at me from the second-floor window. Somehow I feel embarrassed as if they would run to tell anyone. Lucky for me, that cat doesn’t talk, and so I smirk, I am not embarrassed. Nothing is embarrassing, really, if you think about it.
Here are what, at the moment, I predict to be my Fall Fixations! A compilation of general media that makes me look forward to the Autumn season!
Fashion:
Commission Spring 2021
It's difficult for me to recall how I discovered this particular collection or the brand in general, but I fell in love with their environment immediately. These pieces are telling me a story. I am sitting down in front of them, legs crisscrossed, with a cup of hot coffee, listening to these women recite a day in their lives. Sleepwear-looking sets, bulky organza scrunchies, suits, dresses over trousers. This collection exemplifies what I usually gravitate towards when the temperature starts dropping.
Our Legacy Fall 2021
My friend Maxim introduced me to Our Legacy a couple of years ago.
I love their styling, and overall cool-person vibe they convey. In this collection, they take classic pieces and reimagine them into something extremely charming. I adore the unusual layering, and all the leather and wool pieces. Our Legacy makes clothes for the type of captivating people you see smoking outside a bar, those that make you feel too shy to approach and ask for a lighter— though once (if) you do, they offer a pleasant conversation, leaving you with some random philosophy theory or historical fact.
Lemaire Fall 2016
I do not know I have words to describe what this collection does to my brain. It just feels so intimate and personal, which is what I ideally look for in fashion and art. All of the pieces presented here are timeless, practical, elegant, subtly playful. Christophe and Sarah-Linh really know how to provoke emotion through their storytelling.
Céline Fall 2017
Phoebe always knows what we want to wear. This is one of my favourite collections she did for Céline. A forever reference for my fall uniform. I always like to prioritize comfort (of course I’d love to carry that green mohair blanket around), while still feeling provocative and elegant via leather, high heels and slicked back hair. You should watch this collection in video form to get the full Philo experience. This is who I want to be walking down the street.
Music
These are albums I associate with the changing of season. Some of them remind me of past times, others I am hoping to create space for this year.
(Youtube is linked on the song titles, in case you’re not on Spotify)
Honourable mention to the song “Fall”
Film
To me, this season is all about consuming media that is comforting. These are (some of) my favourite films. I wouldn’t mind re-watching one of these rainy fall Sundays.
Irma Vep (1996) by Oliver Assayas
Very sensuous and troubled. This film was my introduction to Assayas.
Red Dessert (1964) by Michelangelo Antonioni
On my Autumn walks, I imagine myself looking like this. Antonioni's first colour film. Very poetic and melancholic. I truthfully am obsessed with this story as I deeply resonate with Giuliana’s poignant sadness and erratic ups and downs. Its colour story, costume design, messy hair, and sleepy-ness live forever in my head.
I loooove Todd Haynes and this film left me speechless the first time I saw it. The main character falls ill with a series of mysterious illnesses triggered by the late-1980s industrial environment. In a way, this is a horror film.
Marnie (1964) by Alfred Hitchcock
Due to its alluring costume design, this would be a perfect fit for the Fashion category. Shoutout to Edith Head, who dressed Tippi Hedren for this role. The costume design perfectly supports Hithcock’s storytelling by developing a contrast between the main character's life before and after marriage.
Here’s an article that breaks down each of her looks.
I hope you enjoyed my Fall selections.
Please, send your Fall comfort films my way.
Bye now!
wonderful as usual. I always skip to the music section first, so that I can listen while reading.
